Hapstak Demetriou Architects (architect)

Located on a steeply sloping lot in DC’s Woodley Park neighborhood, the landscape design for this renovation of an existing residence includes a new entry and front yard, lawn terrace, and lap pool.  The design focused on a careful integration between house and site such that the owners’ lives could flow seamlessly from indoor to outdoor spaces. This required a significant structural intervention and design challenge in the construction of the pool and pool deck into the steep backyard slope.

LAB worked closely with the architects to create a series of terraces and a lap pool that continue the architectural gestures of the house into the landscape.  Linear paving, nested within the overall lawn gesture, turns seamlessly into the stair that brings users down to the pool terrace level. Clean lines of the wood pool deck and the guardrail surrounding this space create a modern edge read against the woodland beyond.  The long walls serve an important structural purpose while extending the materiality of the building to the landscape, screening views from adjacent lots, and creating an intimate environment for quiet swims or small gatherings.
