Located on a steeply sloping lot in DC’s Woodley Park neighborhood, the landscape scope for this renovation of an existing residence includes a new entry and front yard, lawn terrace, and a new lap pool and associated terrace.

The design concept for the landscape was to provide a careful integration between house and site such that the owners’ lives could flow seamlessly from indoor to outdoor spaces.  This required a significant structural intervention where the pool is concerned, since it is located on a steep slope at the back of the site.  LAB worked closely with the architects to create a series of terraces and a lap pool that draws the architectural gestures of the house into the landscape. The long walls serve an important structural purpose while also extending the materiality of the building to the landscape, screening views from adjacent lots, and to creating an intimate environment for quiet swims or small gatherings.
