Diamond Teague Park, on the Anacostia River, addresses several key urban issues: environmental degradation and its amelioration, complex socioeconomic divides, rapid re-development and enrichment of the sensory world.  The site is the last piece of natural, unbulkheaded shoreline in the urbanized area of DC.  This makes it ideal as an environmental education venue where the health of the river can be monitored.  It completes the eastern end of the Anacostia Riverwalk, a pedestrian/bicycle route that links to several other such trails.  Further, it links the Anacostia River with the National’s Ballpark.  A new pier that supports a historic structure and was recently rebuilt and expanded to provide more docking capacity, now houses the Earth Conservation Corps, an environmental non-profit that engages at-risk youths and helps train and employ them in the field of environmental education and restoration.  Kayaks and canoes have their own separate pier also used for environmental education.  There are linkages to the Ballpark and to future development at the park’s northern edge. Due to funding issues, the project is being built in phases. However this first phase stands alone as programmatically and visually coherent.
