GARRISON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RIBBON CUTTING WITH MAYOR
December 13, 2018
Both phases of Garrison Elementary School are complete and ready to be enjoyed by students, teachers, and community members!
Together with architects Bell and Newman, LAB designed exceptional play spaces, sports fields, and outdoor learning environments to support the needs of the school and surrounding community. Those spaces were filled with parents, students, and teachers at last week’s ribbon cutting where Mayor Bowser and city council members spoke about Garrison as a leading example of city and community partnership and collaboration. A prime example of which is exhibited in the public sculptures and custom site furnishings that make these spaces unique and special.
LAB worked closely with artists to review and locate such works. LAB also enlisted the help of DDOT’s Urban Lumber Mill in crafting custom benches for Garrison’s outdoor classroom. These benches, designed as individual seats that can be arranged in multiple formations depending on teacher needs, are made from former DC street trees. This example of creative reuse, helps reinforce lessons of sustainability that are taught throughout the curriculum. Additionally, the outdoor classroom contains a diversity of native plant material to be studied and enjoyed.
